CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Mildred Schuntz (MS): I saw Lillian arrive at about seven-thirty. I know it was that time because I was just taking my nightly meds and I always take them at that time. I heard the steps in the hallway, so I glanced into my peephole and saw her.
Officer Timmons (OT): Did you make contact with her?
MS: Yes, I opened my door and she smiled at me. She said I looked radiant and she gave me a bouquet of daisies from her shopping bag. She always brought me daisies because she knew they were my favorite.
OT: Is that all you spoke about? Did she seem agitated in any way?
MS: Oh, no. She was happy and smiling. Her usual self, but she said that she was late for an appointment and a client was coming over. I didn’t pry, but I think her clients were men she slept with. But I’m a modern woman, you know, and I didn’t think that anything was wrong with what she was doing.
OT: Have you seen a lot of her clients?
MS: Through my peephole, but I’ve never talked to them, unless they were passing when I was coming home.
OT: Did you see anyone else coming to the apartment?
MS: Oh yes, two people. There was a man at about eight-thirty. He was very tall and distinguished looking, but I didn’t really pay any attention to him as all of Lily’s clients are distinguished looking...although some aren’t so tall, and a lot are fat.
OT: Did you speak with him or hear anything?
MS: No, he didn’t knock, just went into the apartment. I didn’t worry about it though, I saw a lot of men who just slipped into the apartment without knocking.
OT: And did you hear anything?
MS: After a little while, I heard screams, but I didn’t think anything of it. It wasn’t the first time I have heard screams and I figured they were just having sex. You know, some play acting.
OT: At what time did you hear screams?
MS: I’m not sure, probably around a half hour later. It might have only been ten minutes though, but it got quiet about five or ten minutes after that. Then at about ten, I saw that other man, the shorter one, head into the apartment. That was when I heard a lot of yelling.
OT: Did you see anyone leave the apartment?
MS: No, I decided to go to bed shortly after that and didn’t know anything had happened in there until you knocked on my door.
